2014 Starts Strong for Twin Cities Residential Construction

Continuing on the growth trend set in 2013, the Minneapolis/St. Paul region had strong residential permit activity this January. Builders pulled 15 percent more permits for 51 percent more units in January 2014 than they did in January 2013.

Twin Cities Residential Construction Surpasses 10,000 units in 2013, a First Since 2006

For the first time since 2006, the Twin Cities region permitted over 10,000 residential units this year, an increase of 14 percent over 2012. About half of the total permitted units were in multi-family dwellings, which was about four percent higher than in 2012.

Twin Cities Residential Construction on Pace to reach nearly 10,000 units in 2013.

Despite a nearly 50 percent drop in planned units from November 2012 to November 2013, overall, residential construction in the region remains quite stable. The reduction can be attributed to fewer multi-family units permitted, as single-family homes were up by four percent for the same period.

Twin Cites Residential Construction Permitting Remained Strong in October 2013

Just-released permit statistics showed that residential construction in the Twin Cities region remains strong. Single-family homes for the month (538) helped push the numbers up, showing an almost 40 percent increase over permits for single family homes in October 2012 (386).
